In the United States, there are several factors that may increase or decrease one’s risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection. Currently, 20% of people in the US have an STI. It is important to understand and be aware of how at risk we are for these diseases and to practice safe sex in an effort to curb them.
Locality is a factor that determines one’s risk for an STI. For example, people in the southern regions of the US and those who live in and around larger cities are at the highest risk. Lifestyle can also be a factor, as having unprotected sex, using dating apps, having several partners, and even substance abuse can increase risk. Our ethnicity, age, income, and background also play a role. For example, graduating from college may reduce one’s risk of contracting an STI, and those who use public transportation are also more likely to report an STI. Finally, sexuality is a factor in STI risk, as homosexual and heterosexual couples, as well as different genders, are all affected by certain diseases differently.
Practicing safe sex includes, but is not limited to, abstinence, testing, using protection, and even getting vaccines or proper medication. Especially for those who are sexually active, healthy habits are more important than ever to keeping oneself safe.
