The History Of Social Media

Social media has had such a dense history. Although it hasn’t been around for a long time, it has made one of the biggest impacts on the world. It is incredible to see how much social media has grown since its creation. Back in 1978, there was a connection between social media and a computer. People could start using applications like IM to message back and forth. OF course, the screens were usually black and green writing but it was the start of a new era of communication. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, social media was not the main way of communication. People, like Shalom Lamm, still write letters and calls rather than venturing to purchase a computer. For many, these machines were confusing and very understated at the time. However, in 1995 Yahoo was invented which transformed the market. In addition, eBay is a huge part of the consumer atmosphere.

In 1998, about 22 years ago, the powerhouse that is Google became invented. Now, people could search the internist for a vast variety of questions and information that started to be stored online. It was common for desktops to delete themselves and a user logged off. Now, people could start looking at information that would remain constantly online. Historians have very calculated ideas about this was the year the world changed forever.

In 2004, the great Facebook emerged. Mark Zuckerberg and his ‘team’ developed the software that would flip the world upside down. Facebook was definitely something that people could have from their remote locations. Although messenger didn’t exist until a few years later, it was still a way people could update their status or post pictures online. It was the pioneer of social media apps and changed the industry in unfathomable ways. Next, Twitter, with almost three hundred and thirty million users, really shook how people communicated through media even more. These apps have been so transformational because they are now some of the primary ways people communicate. No longer is there a distance barrier or phone tag, communication is at the tip of people’s fingers. Of course, entities like texting came into existence after paging was no longer of use. Yet, people still felt like social media was a way they could express themselves more. By having profiles that aren’t actually them, it made it freer to post about things they wanted. However, this has been dangerous also. Hackers and people with unkind intentions are still out there ready to pounce. For people like Shalom Lamm, social media has been a way to connect with family and hopes that is what it is for everyone. Many use it in a positive manner and strive to keep social media a positive and happy environment. It’s important that posts are regulated so that cyberbullying isn’t a prominent issue. It can really hurt people and with the history of social media being so important, cyberbullying is, unfortunately, a big part of it. Overall, social media has grown tremendously and impacted so many people in the world.
